Cunard Royal Rendezvous — What Worked, What Didn’t?

Sydney Skyline From North Head

Sydney Skyline From North Head

As I mentioned I might, last Tuesday morning, with my tripod strapped to my bike, and my camera, lenses, and MacBook Air stuffed into a backpack, I headed up to North Head, Manly to shoot the passing of Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 and Queen Elizabeth as the passed into Sydney Harbour. Some things worked well, but I must admit that overall I came away disappointed with the fruits of my labours.

Cunard Royal Rendezvous

I haven’t been up early for a dawn photo shoot in a while, but I am going to give it a go tomorrow morning.

Occasion?

How about two massive cruise ships, the Queen Elizabeth and Queen Mary 2, meeting off Sydney Harbour Heads and cruising in tandem into port? I will take a shot of that! […]

Looking The Wrong Way?

As the sun peeps over the horizon in outback Australia, the morning sky explodes in colours.

Looking the wrong way? I don’t think so…

Sometimes nowadays we can get too caught up in the details, the minutiae of controls and settings. Did we set ISO correctly? What about white balance? Am I in the right position? What about over there? Is the foreground cluttered? Rule of Thirds?

Sometimes our favorite images are captured, not through technical excellence and precise adjustments of the camera controls, but by standing back and looking around.

Sometimes our best images are captured, not by focusing on what everyone else is looking at, but by looking the wrong way…

Before & After — Moody Adam

Moody Adam Three
I recently subscribed to an excellent blog entitled “Serious Amateur Photography” by Jeff Lynch. In particular I liked his how-to posts, i.e. how to achieve a certain photographic result. So in that spirit, I want to share how I created the image above…

Woo — A Rainbow!

F-22 Rainbow (Museum edition)

F-22 Rainbow (Museum edition) — by Bernardo Malfitano, AirShowFan.com

I am a sucker for Airshows, and Aircraft. I originally wanted to be a pilot (what little boy doesn’t?) and ended up studying Aeronautical Engineering. How I wound up in IT I’ll never know, but my love of aviation has found new expression in photography.

This is NOT my photo, but it is so good that I had to post it. It was taken by Bernardo Malfitano, from Seattle, and he describes it as follows:

A picture I took at MCAS Miramar’s 2008 airshow. A lot of people really like it. It shows an F-22 at the top of the loop. The low pressure over the wings has cooled the air below its dew point, causing the humidity to condense into visible water droplets… and this happened in just the right place in the sky for sunlight to undergo total internal refraction through the water droplets at just the right angle to be refracted towards me, i.e. I see rainbow colors over the airplane. A very neat effect.

Very kind of him for sharing it with the world.

Protecting an Image by Watermarking…

Qantas Airbus A380 does a low pass over Sydney

Qantas Airbus A380 does a low pass over Sydney

…ruins it.

At least if you have created a watermark of sufficient boldness to defeat the various semi-skilled image thief’s which inhabit the world wide web as it exists today.  You only have to do a simple Google search to give an exhaustive list of tools and techniques to remove watermarks on images.

Some Quick Links

Flickrs New Look

After the “War and Peace” like length of my last post on “Editing Canon EOS 7D Video with Premiere Pro”, I have taken a bit of a break. Here are some quick photography related links to distract while I craft my next masterpiece :-)

  • Lifehacker — How to record great video with your hd dslr camera. Some great tips on shooting video, including knowing which way your focus ring moves. Sounds simple, but you don’t have time to mess around with this when shooting video.
  • ImpulseAdventure — Comparison of Digital Photo Catalog Software. After my brief reviews of DAM software such as Adobe Lightroom, I found this excellent (and massive) comparison table of pretty much every software product for digital asset management known to man.
  • Finally, Flickr will shortly be introducing an exciting new look, as seen in the image at the head of this post. It also features a great “Dark” mode, seen below, something which many third party services had provided in the past. I use Flickr to showcase my images, it’s a great community, and I enjoy the feedback that an image or gallery on my website doesn’t necessarily receive.
