Help Wanted for the Blog « Vincent Laforet’s Blog

I’m looking for someone who is pretty obsessed with gear.   If you get a certain kind of high with getting a chance to be the very first to hold a prototype in your hands – this is the job for you.   The catch?  You need to have a good understanding of Word Press and some HTML – the more the better – as you’ll be helping to develop the “My Gear” section of this blog.  I’m looking for someone to work part time for 2–3 days a week regularly throughout the year.

Why My Photos Disappoint Me Sometimes

All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you.

Short version… keep at it.

dpreview.com Looking for Freelance Writers

I see that one of my favorite Camera sites is looking for Freelance Writers. This sounds like my dream job, work from home, on your own schedule, reviewing the latest and greatest in Camera technology.

Judging by my typical posting rate here though, maybe it’s not such a great idea ;-)

Upgrade In Progress

Please forgive the occasional broken link, missing image, and empty portfolio!

UPDATE: Most parts of the website should be functional now. Some old posts still need some finessing, but other than that, we should be there!

Major Website Upgrade This Weekend

Change comes to us all, and this website is no different. Over the next couple of days I will be giving the entire site a refresh which should (if I am very careful and lucky :-) ):

  • Preserve all my blog content, including comments, permalinks, stats, etc.
  • Make it easier to add new content, including new full screen galleries
  • Have a more refined, professional look and feel
  • Fully support browsing on iPhone, iPad, etc.
  • Bit a little slicker, and more up2date behind the curtain

While there will be some downtime (I unfortunately can’t afford mirrored real time systems), hopefully it won’t be too painful. When all is said and done, I will try an write up my tips for setting up your own photography website.

Some More Quick Links

Snow Leopard

Can A (Snow) Leopard Change It’s Spots?

Those few hardy souls following my Twitter stream must be wondering what’s going on with some bizarre posts. I have been working away with giving my website a fresh lick of paint, and testing the changes at www.jonathanbourke.ie. It’s coming along nicely, but it will be a few weeks yet. The new site, while looking similar to the existing site, will have a more consistent structure to it and will greatly ease gallery posting.

In the meantime, here are some interesting links I came across:

  • How To Get The Best Colour Out Of Your Photos — Lifehacker again comes up with a great guide for photographers. This one is heavily color focused, and the Photoshop wizardry required.
  • How to get (more) space in a newspaper — I follow the @adrianweckler on Twitter, editor of the consumer tech section in the Sunday Business Post newspaper in Ireland. He shares some great tips for PR people (and photographers) in this post bemoaning the quality of photo’s sent to journalists.
  • Lightroom Camera Calibration — I spend way too much time on my photography tools, rather than using my photography tools. This post on Camera Calibration in Lightroom definitely falls into the first category, but what the hell, I’ll share this link from Matt Kloskowski anyway.
  • What I’d Love to See in Lightroom 4 — Damn; and I am only getting started on Lightroom 3 (and the 3.2 release is nearly upon us, bringing with it direct posting to Facebook!). Scott Kelby gets the ball rolling with his wish list for Lightroom 4, then has to defend it, before others chime in with their suggestions.

Do You Use Lightroom? WordPress?

Lightroom & WordPress user? Then check this out!

Lightroom & WordPress user? Then check this out!

Getting my images from Lightroom to my website has always been a bit of an ordeal:

  1. Select images and export from Lightroom to disk
  2. Log into wordpress, and manage media
  3. Upload new images, and dig around on your hard disk to find them
  4. Create a new blog post, or page, or whatever, and then attach the images to them
  5. Profit?

If this sounds like you, then you absolutely need this Adobe Lightroom Export plugin from Luc Renambot called “Dossier De Presse”. Read on for more details and a sample gallery.

Some Quick Links

Flickrs New Look

After the “War and Peace” like length of my last post on “Editing Canon EOS 7D Video with Premiere Pro”, I have taken a bit of a break. Here are some quick photography related links to distract while I craft my next masterpiece :-)

  • Lifehacker — How to record great video with your hd dslr camera. Some great tips on shooting video, including knowing which way your focus ring moves. Sounds simple, but you don’t have time to mess around with this when shooting video.
  • ImpulseAdventure — Comparison of Digital Photo Catalog Software. After my brief reviews of DAM software such as Adobe Lightroom, I found this excellent (and massive) comparison table of pretty much every software product for digital asset management known to man.
  • Finally, Flickr will shortly be introducing an exciting new look, as seen in the image at the head of this post. It also features a great “Dark” mode, seen below, something which many third party services had provided in the past. I use Flickr to showcase my images, it’s a great community, and I enjoy the feedback that an image or gallery on my website doesn’t necessarily receive.

    Website Relaunch

The sun emerging from a storm in the Maldives

The sun emerging from a storm in the Maldives

So I am finally relaunching the website. It has taken some time, but I believe that I now have the bits and pieces in place to meet my needs for the future. For those who are interested in these things, I will update my previous post on this topic at a later date. In particular I wanted my website to:

    • showcase my photography — check out the new Portfolio section which will grow over time
    • facilitate sales of my images — you can now do this by clicking the “Buy Print” links over each image in the Portfolio
    • provide a forum to discuss photography, camera gear, techniques, and my struggles with all of these — see my Blog
    • let people find out about me, and get in touch on my About Me page

And I wanted this all to look in some way professional!

For those who have called around before, you will notice that I have migrated my domain to a “.Com”. The main reason for this is that I now live in Australia, and rather than get an Australian domain to augment my existing “.ie”, it would be simpler to just use the one truly global domain name, despite the fact that “.Com” was never intended to fulfil this role.

I have migrated most of the old content, and implemented a redirect from my old site, but please get in touch if you find anything which needs correcting.
